The Black Men Maroon Space (BMMS) was created for Black men to self-actualize as leaders. As a California-based organization, BMMS is a place for formerly incarcerated and directly impacted Black men who lead in the social justice movement to be in community and support each other. Like the maroon communities during chattel slavery, BMMS is an opportunity for Black men to get free: free from our trauma and the impact of systems and structures that harm us. BMMS is also an opportunity to garner skills for governance from the inside out. BMMS is a home for Black men to build connections and capacity, cultivate resilience, and hold ourselves accountable. There are few spaces dedicated to the leadership development of Black men in movement, especially in California.
We are cultivate a cadre of bold, brilliant, and somatically grounded Black men. Our yearly cohorts coalesce around a set of collective values to develop leaders who lead from a place of alignment and deep relationship with others. Our participants receive training around:
Abolition
Healing practices
Masculinity, Patriarchy, and Intersectionality
Racial Capitalism
And much more!
As we heal and grow, the relationships with our families, communities, and the entire movement will shift significantly. Through our healing we will increase our collective capacity to experience Black joy and win liberation for Black people, for all people.
